Metadata for resources with multiple languages + ISO 639-3

We’ve received several requests to make it easier to describe resources that are in multiple languages.

Currently, the Language property in the DataCite Metadata Schema is non-repeatable and asks for the “primary” language of the resource, which isn’t always applicable.

A couple questions I have at this juncture:

  • Do you see any disadvantages to making the Language property repeatable in a future schema release?
  • For resources in multiple languages, is there a need to optionally indicate a “primary” language (for example, from a harvester/aggregator point of view)?

Separately, we’re also looking at changing the guidance to recommend ISO 639-3 (currently it is 639-1), and would be interested in any feedback on this as well.
