I’m interested to learn if/how Crossref and DataCite award/grant DOIs are pushed into ORCID records (if the ORCID record holder has given permission).
- In many, traditional funding use cases, it would make sense to push these records into the Funding section of the ORCID record.
- In our current use case, we’re assigning DOIs to awards to use facilities (e.g., light sources, super computers, neutron sources). These types of awards would go into the Research Resources section of the ORCID Record.
- So, knowing which records to push to each section could be a challenge.
I’ve recently heard that there might be a recommendation or policy that the funder need to be the ones to push that information to ORCID records (not Crossref or DataCite). If this is the case, that might negated my question above.
Any additional information from any of he PID organizations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Carly - we’ve had early discussions with both Crossref and DataCite about extending their current auto-update functionality to funding awards. You are right that there are quite some details to work out, including the logic to ensure different award types are mapped to the correct part of the ORCID record (and how to ensure that there is sufficient metadata associated with the award DOI to enable this).
You are also correct that ORCID requires funders to be ORCID members for their funding data to be written into ORCID. There are ways to enable this to be done via third parties, for example by following our Service Provider model, but again, no firm decisions have been taken on this.
Given these are early discussions, I don’t have any news on firm timelines yet.
Hope this is somewhat helpful and more to come on this…
Thanks @CShillum! This is very helpful to know and understand. I look forward to hearing more in the future.
